So if I went with these, I would be spending a considerable amount of time migrating the configs over, time I don't have much of being the sole sys admin and network engineer for 200 people. So it sounds like the ASAВ + FirePOWER marriage isn't much of a marriage, and they're still working much as two separate devices in one box, just like those goofy SSM modules they made for the 5500's. Even seasoned network engineers who have worked with ASA's for years (as I have) mentioned that they needed a considerable amount of time and several Cisco support cases opened to migrate from the 5500 ASA's they were using previously. The other issue I'm seeing with the FirePOWER is what I've read about how difficult they are to set up. So that's the first reason for considering alternatives. Though if we're forced to go with the 5508-X for throughput reasons, it may not be. So the 5506-X, if powerful enough (Cisco's specs look fine for throughput, but our CDW rep says their estimates are quite far from realworld, and gave their own much lower throughput estimates I could not find any AMP+IDS without AVC though) is quite cost effective. We have 100/100 Internet connections in the two large offices, though average usage is substantially lower (perhaps 25-40 most days) and peak usage never exceeds about 75 mbps. I know that using IPS and AMP requires a lot of horsepower, though I was planning to exclude our Google Apps traffic as it is the majority of our bandwidth and might allow us to use a 5506-X instead of 5508-X. So I'd like a replacement that I can run IPS on as well, in a more limited, basic form, protecting against the most dangerous things coming in over the Internet in real-time. But it will only be a passive, IDS deployment, as I don't want single points of failures on these little (albeit powerful) desktops i've repurposed as servers. It will be configured to analyze traffic from each ASA and each core switch (2 per office) in the two bigger offices, analyzing as much as the sensors can physically handle. Now it's important to note that we're wanting NGFW features (primary IDS/IPS and AMP), and I was already in the process of deploying a distributed Snort system, using a sensor in each office and a VM for the server. So I need more info on this, and there are several potential issues that I'm concerned about. We already have spare 5505's in each office in the event of failure, and I'm not worried about lack of warranty (well I think that's expired not sure about our SmartNET contract). I'm also considering third-parties in the same general category as the 5506-X and 5508-X FirePOWER units (SonicWall, Watchguard, and Juniper, among others), as well as possibly keeping the 5505's in service and just using the Snort IDS deployment being built (more on that below). Naturally, first thing I looked at was the replacement FirePOWER series. So I've been looking at replacement options.

But the 5505's are older, don't have any NGFW features, and are now EOL anyway. The two smaller offices have Meraki MX-60W & MX-64W appliances, which we're happy with and we're not looking to replace. Our two larger offices have ASA 5505 appliances to handle firewalling and VPN endpoints (one office mainly handles VPN, but it fails over to the other in case of outage). I'm the Senior Systems Administrator for a company with four main offices (two large and two small), and about a dozen remote / home based workers.
